It’s probably no secret that eventually we will see a Twisted Metal game on the PS3. The beloved franchise has made it onto every Sony platform thus far and in multiple iterations (technically speaking). We are still awaiting our first TM game on the PS3 aside from the re-release of Twisted Metal 2 as a PS1 classic (which is probably the best TM game out there; Black being a very close second).
David Jaffe has been the man linked to all of the (good) Twisted Metal games in the past. Notice the difference in quality when Sony assigned the franchise to be developed by 989 Studios in the late 90s for the PSone as compared to the first two games that were developed by then Singletrac (now Incognito). While I have enjoyed every TM game that has hit the streets, whenever I think of TM mayhem I think of the productions that Jaffe has been associated with. So why do I specifically mention David Jaffe in all of this? After all the man is part of a development crew – he doesn’t produce these games himself. Well, perhaps David Jaffe has let it slip that Twisted Metal for the PS3 will be a reality, and it could be soon.
Here is what we know right now. David Jaffe went independent with Mike Campbell, who has been associated with Jaffe dating back to the original TM games. They are now heading the Utah based Eat Sleep Play development team, which currently is working on a Sony exclusive project that has yet to be revealed. Eat Sleep Play has currently only released two games thus far in their existence – Calling All Cars (PSN game), and the PS2 port of Twisted Metal Head On Extra Twisted Edition (with the lost TM Black 2 levels). Eventually this project will have to be revealed, as Sony who is publishing the project will eventually want to see a product; but given Jaffe’s history with the company they are in no hurry to rush him (remember, Jaffe was the director of the first God of War game, look how that franchise has turned out).
A couple of years ago the internet was bull rushed with what was thought of as a Twisted Metal teaser. It pictures an enhanced Sweet Tooth logo shaped in almost a mushroom cloud. Remember this:

The teaser turned out to be false. But Sony did take their sweet time to decline. If it is truly fake, then that is one hell of a job well done by the artist as it was modeled perfectly.
Lets fast forward to a few months ago when Gamervision.com showed off an email that David Jaffe himself posted that was sent to Mike Campbell regarding their secret project. Jaffe went to the liberty to blurrying out certain words that might hint to what the game was to make it seem like he wasn’t revealing anything. According to Gamervision Jaffe’s original post showed words blurred out but they were easily made out if you look hard enough. Jaffe went on to take down the original post and re-post the image with stronger censors. However the original remains intact. Take a look at the picture (click to enlarge):
Here is what Gamervision posted regarding this image:
“What we think is there is below, with the bold words our guesses…
CHARACTER AND CHARACTER ANIMATION ISSUES
High concept: We need the game to have more personality and feel like an action… our human characters are a big way we are going to get that vibe. I would like to see the following… the milestone and feel it would go a long way to wowing the crowds.
#1 – … animation of capturing him, running over him and dragging him behind your car…
#2 – …gives him personality- right now it’s so dry- needs to feel action.
a- When he is knocked out of a car and onto the ground he crawls frantically, looking… approaching cars, trying to get away, slipping as he tries to get up.”
Hmm…interesting right? Now is here we come in. Thankfully to my current state of insomnia I haven’t been able to sleep right now, but not to worry I am sure to fall flat on my face in just a couple of hours. But before I do I want to show you one of David Jaffe’s current tweets from his Twitter that sparked some interest. It reads: “djaffe: wondering IF we ever made a Twisted Metal for PS3, would players in Europe give a shit or is it just a USA kind of product…?” Here is a pic of one of my monitors to show it’s authenticity (click to enlarge):
Yes I am sporting a kickass Led Zeppelin background (also currently listening to “Whole Lotta Live (live)” while typing this – 23 minutes of awesome).
What should we make of this? Yeah, it could be just random post from Jaffe; after all he has made plenty of random remarks on his twitter. So here is what I propose Twisted Metal fans and non-fans alike. The bottomline here is that we here @ TripleChat and across PS3 nation want a new Twisted Metal game, and we want it to come from the minds behind the originals as well as the Black series. We have been teased for too long. So gamers across Europe, David Jaffe asks you this question – would you give a sh*t for a new Twisted Metal game? The answer is yes, and we want you personally to tell him.
Log on to twitter, follow ‘djaffe‘ and respond with this:
@djaffe – Yes we (the Europeans) would love a new Twisted Metal game. Show us what we want to see!
And right now is the perfect time to tell him this because just a couple of hours after that tweet, he posted on Twitter the following – “djaffe: ok my interest in Green Hornet- or making another Twisted Metal- just shot up a good 100%
” This is after he saw the reveal of the Green Hornet vehicle for the upcoming movie at Comic Con (view it here).
There you have it folks – it’s obvious Jaffe wants to be behind a new Twisted Metal game (if he isn’t already), but it’s up to us to speak out and say we want it. Gamers all across Europe, the fate of Twisted Metal on PS3 is in your hands. Mr. Jaffe asked you if you would care, and by golly, you best respond saying yes you do. Perhaps Obama will send you another bailout if you give us the inspiration to go forward with a new Twisted Metal title.
Now to try to get some sleep.
